We leave early in the morning from Verada Tour pontoon to Mila 36 – Sireasa and Sontea channels, where various lakes enclosed by reeds, the lily floating islands and the famous Danube Delta birds can be admired. Baclanesti and Fortuna Lakes are part of Sontea storm lake complex and offer interesting views with colonies of pelicans, swans, coots, grebes.
Then we head through the Olguta and Sontea Lata Channels to Mila 23 village – the native village of former canoeist Ivan Patzaichin, Olympic and world champion, a typical fishing village called “Romanian Venice”.
Here we make a short stop for 30 minutes, then continue the trip and get to Letea village where we will go in horse carts or SUVs and visit the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe, the only oak forest in the world grown on a sea bank. Forest abound in climbing plants: wild vine, hops, forest tendril and not least the Greek liana (Periploca graeca), that gives the forest a Mediterranean appearance.
After the meal, we will head to Sulina where we stop to visit the town for about 2 hours. Sights to see: Palace of former European Danube Commission; the Old Lighthouse (built in 1870, today a museum) and the New lighthouse that still serves the ships in the area; the Maritime Cemetery which reveals the multinational character of the city through all the tombstones, where sailors, pirates, pilots, mechanics ships and many other people have found a resting place.
