Fishing ban in the Danube Delta

What do you need to know?

In 2025, fishing in the Danube Delta is banned in certain periods and areas, according to Order 23/297/2025 published on 1 February. This ban applies to all types of fishing: commercial, sport and family. Here are the important details:

Prohibition periods in 2025:

  • 09 April - 07 June: General ban on all species of fish, crustaceans and molluscs in natural habitats (60 days).
  • 24 April - 07 June: Ban in border waters (45 days).
  • 16 April - 30 May: Ban for waters bordering Ukraine and Bulgaria, including Musura Bay.
  • Areas where fishing is prohibited:

    • Razim-Sinoe complex and coastal lakes: 09 April - 07 June.
    • Musura Bay: 16 April - 30 May, with possible extension depending on hydrological conditions.
    • Prut River and Lake Stânca-Costești: 09 April - 07 June.
    • River Danube (border with Bulgaria): 16 April - 30 May.
    • Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve: General ban 09 April - 07 June.
  • Species restrictions for the 2025 fishing season:

    • Știucă: Closed from 01 February to 20 March and from 09 April to 07 June.
    • Walleye and perch: Banned between 20 March - 07 June.
    • Lin: Closed between 07 June - 06 July.
    • Stur Stur Sturgeon, plaice, sea trout: Total year-round ban.
    • Coregon: Banned all year round.
    • Native trout, rainbow trout and brook trout: Banned between 01 October - 31 March.
    • Calcan: Closed from 15 April to 15 June.
  • Protected species - year-round ban:

    • Stur Sturgeon (morun, moray, smelt, smelt, smelt).
    • Common loach (Hucho hucho) and whitefish (Coregonus sp.).
    • Freshwater species: Stonechick, spindle, river gurnard, striped sandpiper, rudd, guvid, red wagtail, wigeon, common meadowlark, common meadowlark and octopus.
  • Rules for recreational fishing after the ban:

    • Catch & Release: Pike, pike, mackerel, catfish and carp may only be fished on a catch-and-release basis, with the retention of one individual per day of a single species.
    • Catch limits: Maximum 10 kg of fish/fish or 15 kg/family, regardless of the number of fishing days.
    • Prohibitions on lakes and canals: Recreational fishing is permitted only in the areas listed in Annex 3 to Order No 159/1266 of 2011.
  • The best times for fishing in the Danube Delta:

    • After prohibition (June - October): Ideal for carp and catfish.
    • Autumn (September - November): The best time of year thanks to intense fish activity.
  • Important rules for anglers:

    • Maximum catch: 5 kg fish/day or one fish if over 5 kg.
    • Composed sevens: Permitted between 1 June - 30 September, 70/100 mm mesh only.
    • Năvoade: Prohibited in the Danube Delta, with the exception of the Razim-Sinoe Complex when the level of the Danube at Tulcea is below 100 cm.
  • Fish species permanently banned by 2025:

    • Sturgeons: Morun, nisetru, nisetru, păstrugă, cegă.
    • Lostrița: Protected by law.
    • Coregon: Banned all year round.
    • Invasive species: Dwarf catfish, sun perch and silver carp can be fished without restrictions.
  • Minimum dimensions for restraint:

    • Crap: 35 cm.
    • Salal: 40 cm.
    • Sleep: 50 cm.
    • Biban: 20 cm.
      Specimens below these sizes must be released immediately.
  • Bans on fishing methods:

    • Plase, setci, vintire: Prohibited in recreational fisheries.
    • Multiple tabs: Maximum two rods simultaneously.
    • Illegal methods: Electro and explosives fishing is prohibited.
  • Penalties for breaking the rules:

    • Fines: Between 500 and 5,000 lei for no licence or illegal catches.
    • Confiscation of equipment: In case of use of prohibited methods.
    • Fishing ban: Poaching or using illegal methods.
  • Recommendations for responsible fishing:

    • Get informed: Check the periods and areas of prohibition.
    • Respect maximum catches: Helps protect aquatic resources.
    • Avoid sanctions: Fish only where and when you can.
